Social projects

Consultancy, research, events

Below are photos with Rotterdam Mayor Aboutaleb during some of the Antillean tables organized by TransCity, in the first year of his mayorship. It is an example of the social projects that TransCity and Dreamers Inc. have done. After all, our agencies are uniquely capable of bringing bicultural Dutch people of any background to the table, and then to begin a conversation on the basis of ambition and expectations for the future, rather than the problems that people encounter.

Interviews were held with, among others, Caribbean Rotterdam residents without a job, ex-convicts, young people in the possession of firearms and teenage mothers. Successful Caribbean residents of Rotterdam were also invited, role models who encourage the mostly young discussion partners to take new initiatives with the aim of paving the way to a better future.

Group discussions were organized over five long evenings at five different locations whereby, every 20 minutes, three young people left the room for a speed date with the mayor. This format allowed the mayor to have one-on-one conversations with some 150 Caribbean young people in a month, resulting in numerous extraordinary new insights.

Role models were invited to influence the mindset of young people; inspire, get ideas, see new opportunities. For example, during the closing event of these Antillean tables, the then upcoming comedian Jandino Asporaat performed.

Other examples of social projects include:

  • The city of Almere: we asked school children to research road safety in their neighbourhood;
  • Rotterdam youth detention center: discussions with inmates in a  youth detention center about their ambitions for the future. Role models were invited to participate in the discussions;
  • Group discussions in Groningen, Helmond and Almere on the motivations of bicultural Dutch people to perform voluntary work for the Netherlands Red Cross.
